Artisans Update

In yesterday's post, I didn't get a chance to post pictures of the artwork or garden. So, here it is. We have several folks that have placed their artwork/crafts at the store. Back again is Lauren Flannigan with her felt creations. She is quite creative and has done beautiful work. I think you'll like it. Also, Charlie has been painting again and below is one of his works featuring frogs. I have tried to get some good pictures of the zinnias in the garden. Two of my shots are blown up and framed. (Please excuse the glare off of the glass.) Enjoy and hope to see you this weekend.

Garden Update as Promised

For our first garden in years and years, Charlie and I are pleased. We got a lot of veggies, had fun and even learned to can. We were given a pressure canner that is probably 40+ years old and still works fine. The first canning, we were a bundle of nerves to say the least. Charlie even asked me if I realized that we were putting a pipe bomb on the stove. Needless to say, we figured it out and now consider ourselves old hands and aren't worried about blowing up the place. We've done 40+ pints and 5 quarts of green beans, frozen butter peas and canned tomatoes. We're set for the winter months we think. Now, as for the corn, the raccoons and weather did us in. Even with two plantings, we got almost nothing. We'll do better next year we hope. The following are pictures from the garden this week. The prettiest vegetable flower I think is okra. Not being an okra fan, I couldn't believe it when Charlie planted them since he isn't much of a fan either. Well, let me tell you, grilled okra is absolutely wonderful. Our friend Ellen told us about it and we've eaten as much as we can. Give it a try - you'll love it!

The watermelons have been hit and miss. Some great, others, not so good.

I also grew zinnias and have throughly enjoyed them and will plant even more next year.

OK, it has been awhile since I've sent anything out at least picture wise. In fact, I think it was when we were in the beginning stages of our garden and for the June sale.

So, a lot to catch you up on.....

To begin and as you know, we are having a sale this weekend, Sept. 11th and 12th. Charlie, Tesa and Judi have been out hunting and found some great things. We also are having a "It's Gotta Go Sale" next door with several vendors who are ready to deal.

The pictures are just a sampling of what is in the store as well as what is next door at the "Gotta Go" sale. Hope to see you tomorrow and/or Saturday!

We also have some of artisans with their wares and I'll post those pictures along with garden pictures tomorrow. Come on down, up or over (whatever your perspective) and see us.

Rent will be $20 for a 10’ x 10’ space plus four hours of co-op time during the two days or $5 for each of the four hours you can’t co-op. Marketplace on Taylor

Open June 12th and 13th 9-4

Well, we opened today for our sale for the month of June. (FYI, we won't be open again until the second weekend in September!) We have had some local artisans bring in their work and it has been fun to say the least. We may be known as a little town south of Hot 'Lanta but let me tell you - "They got nothin' on talent in Atlanta!!"

Just take "a gander" at what has been brought in.........

First, let's start with local gardner, eco-friendly, conservation guru Jim Watson. Here is a beautiful bench he has made from walnut. All I can say is "Wow". The bench is simply beautiful.

Now, let's move on to his step-daughter, Lauren of "Lolly felt like it..." ("Lolly" - a childhood name I'm guessing?). She has as you can see, the motto "Green Crafting for a Better Tomorrow". She is a felt guru in her own right. She brought in so many different felt items it is amazing. Just check out the pictures.......

Now, for a change in artists............

Tiffany is a sewing guru. Her specialty is corsets - yes, corsets. Who knew women were still wearing them? She has quite an internet business for these corsets. Anyway, here is one she has brought in and oh my, it is of beautiful material and beautifully done. Now, a 23 inch waist? Maybe when I was three........

Ok, we've covered workworking, felt goods, corsets and now let's go for the visual arts. Charlie has discovered he likes to paint (Grandpa Moses?). Here are a few of his works...

As you know, I like photography. Here is one that I've done which I call "The Barn".

On another note, I thought I'd put in a "Green Spot" idea. Last year and in many years past, we've had trouble with ants getting into our hummingbird feeder. I knew they wouldn't go over soap and finally figured out that if I put a capful of soap between them and the feeder, it might work. Well it did. Pictured here is a scoop with the handle broken off. (A drink bottle cap will work fine.) I took a nail and stuck it through the bottom, fixed a twist tie through it to hook it with the chain and then plugged the hole with hot glue. After that, I put in liguid dish detergent. This was last year and I haven't changed the detergent since then. It went through the winter with no problem and we have no ants in the feeder. It may look yucky at this point but it does work. If you have a "Green Spot" idea, please email it to me.

Marketplace on Taylor this Weekend

The June sale at Marketplace on Taylor is this weekend, June 12th and 13th from 9-4. So far, the things being brought in are not only fun but pretty amazing. We have several artisans that are bringing in their work tomorrow so I'll post pictures of their goodies ASAP.

First though, you know I have to put a nature picture in......this one is a nasturtium from our garden, possibly one we ate tonight in a salad! It is absolutely amazing how fast things grow and what fun we are having out there digging in the dirt. In fact, Charlie planted another grapevine and two blueberry bushes today. Hopefully they will yield one day!

On another note, you know, the garden.......Charlie and I have been quite pleased so far. The corn is almost my shoulder height and we have green tomatoes. The butter peas think they are supposed to climb so we're going to give them something to climb on soon. We've eaten lettuce, parsley, basil, plus nasturtium leaves and flowers.

So far, so good!

Charlie and I are continuing to work on the garden and are really enjoying it. His imagination is really in gear and I am along for the ride and fresh produce of course. We've picked lettuce, parsley and some of his mother's basil. She has a raised bed going as well. We have two tomatoes about the size of marbles and the corn is knee high. A few years ago, we were in Minnesota during the summer and their saying was that they wanted their corn to be "Knee high by the 4th of July". We measured this morning and found ours is knee high (even by Charlie's knees) so I guess our goal should be "Knee high by Memorial Day" -

doesn't rhyme though.

Oh, well.

Rain, rain, rain - I'm not complaining and neither are the mosquitoes! It has been wonderful to get it. I just hope we'll have more during the summer. It is certainly helping our water bill and the plants. Here is a photo update of where we are now with the garden..........

Wow, even though it has been two months since we opened for the weekend, this weekend's sale has crept up on me! I woke up thinking, I DIDN'T SENT OUT THE BLOG!! So, here it is.

With Spring officially here and great weather, many of us have been out digging in the dirt either planting flowers, a vegetable garden or for Charlie and me, both. It has felt so good to get things ready, plant and anticipate the bounty of our efforts. In fact, we planted the garden on Tuesday and had planted tomatoes earlier - so where are the veggies and why hasn't anything sprouted yet? As you can see, I'm ready to see results!

(Just went out to the garden and this might, just might be our first sprout - a zinnia or more than likely, a weed - we'll see.)

So, what to you do with old boots - make them into planters!

We have also been looking around the store and have realized that there is a bounty of containers and other items that would look great in a garden. Come on in this weekend to see what you can find to make your garden or flower beds have that personal and unique touch.

What, you might ask is the "Marketplace on Taylor"? Well, it is a monthly event held on the second weekend of the month where dealers who specialize in antiques, home decor, collectibles, coins, estate sales, jewelry, the unusual and unique plus vintage to primitive gather to sell their wares. This event will be housed at the former location of From Out of the Past -430 East Taylor Street Griffin, Georgia.

"Marketplace on Taylor", a new name, was designed to capture the concept that the sale will be a multi-dealer event with loads of diverse items - a marketplace for all. Here are some pictures of last month's sale. This month, there will be even more to choose from so you mark your calendar, you don't want to miss this!
